Ok. I was DM. Player who's the Paladin was absent, so no moral center of the party (we played that off as him being entranced by some form of sorcery, so they left him in the hotel). The players decide that they need to access a temple in order to find a relic that they need to stop an ancient evil from awakening (you know, that old bit). They find that the temple is inhabited by very tough-to-kill shadow creatures that are only visible while standing on certain portions of the checkerboard floor, and - of course - give up, temporarily. They then begin to form a plan: bribe a crew of pirates who happen to be docked at the port (and also happen to have appropriated most of the players' magic items earlier) to kill the beasties for them. They decide to tip off the guardsmen that there are pirates docked, tell the pirates that the guardsmen know about their presence in exchange for help, while at the same time enlisting an army of beggars to start a riot. They set the meeting place for a plaza that the ranger points out on the map, when I innocently state, "That's not a plaza, that's a prison." There is a moment of stunned silence, followed by a slight revision of the plan involving the enlisting of armed and dangerous prisoners . . . by the end of the game, the five party members own a city and some pirates.

One thing that really grates on my nerves is stereotyping.
The majority of folk who play D&D are not overweight, pimple-faced, friendless "dweebs". The game isn't just played by those obsessed; it's a good outlet for those interested in theatre and drama (as it involves much acting), and writers (making a universe takes a lot of work, y'know). Arilou, I have no problem with anything you said - your opinions seem well-founded, but Hafles' statement gets to me for some reason. |

Well, standing up and putting on a pointy hat is a little farther than we ever go, heh. We mostly sit around as ourselves, until we have to talk to an NPC.
There are different levels of playing, I suppose, but that's how we roll. *shrug* |

Is it just me, or is it time for an all-encompassing Fantasy book topic?
