Yeah, This guild has been talked about many times, but this is by far the stupidest discussion, especially the first post.

Having a guild influenced by weilding a pole arm is not really that hot of a idea. The guilds now cater to the basic character classes, axemen, rangers, mages, blah, blah, blah. They were set up to provide a elite corp of adventurers to fight evil. Except the Rogues, they were set up to better train hoodlums to steal from you.
Only guild I still have trouble with is Rangers and the whips. Can you imagine Strider walking up to a orc and saying "Excuse me sir, can we go fight away from these trees, so my whip does not get tangled in them?"

Well, I see your point about the Rangers, and whips, in Wyvern. Its sort of like the Paladins being a club for sword wielders. Most aren't very pallie like, as in fantasy tales. Bah, still goes against my sensibilities, should have named it whipsman quild, lol.
But the idea of a pole arm guild makes me completley nauseous. Very few instances where polearms were a common weapon. Mainly pikes were used by infantry in formations. Halderd weilders were scattered in the formation to chop up the mounted calvalry stalled by the pikes. And yes, the greeks, and romans used a form of pikes. Mainly someone using a halberd was for show, ie Guards. Blah, blah, blah, scuse, I am rambling again.

actually believe it or not, pikes and otehr polearms (including flails) were quite common. Infact they were MORE common than swords (in RL of course. <!-- s:P --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_razz.gif" alt="Razz" title="Razz" /><!-- s:P -->) see, swords require more metal than a polearm and when good metal was scarce... also, maces were quite common. However, there were lots of different cross over weapons, that could almost be swords and almost be clubs but are neither. Or they are nearly a polearm but are also sort of liek a club.... It can be rather complicated. : )

Default polearms

Ah, the close-mindedness. You can taste it.

Of course we should have a polearms guild! You can buy them, fight with them, and train in them, so therefore we should have a guild for them. The fact that the wizards don't have the time to do it is beside the point. This is the ideas section.

I noodled around with polearms a bit in past. Aside from +1 Polearm at every level, you'd want a strength bonus, since polearms are heavy (halberds are 10 or so pounds).

You'd also want a hurled weapons bonus, since we're dreaming. Assuming they eventually fix it, it would only make sense to be able to wield the spear as a polearm as well as know how to throw it.

Calling it something other than dragoons would be best, since dragoons implies mounts. While fun, that seems a bit complicated.

You know they could just have a smithers guild...

+1 in smithing at each level and you get the levels by smithing.

#1 problem: Even though its unbalanced, No other Melee guilds give minuses to other melee skills that I know of.

#2 problem: 1 dodge per level? Holding a polearm and dodging at the same time is somewhat implausible, and its just STUPID to be able to dodge like that as well as unarmed monks in robes do. MAYBE switch around with healing.

And I'm not so sure about the spirit magic thing, as most spirit magic spells don't really have much to do with polearm type things. Maybe if you could explain that a bit more.

I actually could see dodging with a polearm as feasible, just not in the conventional sense of the word. With a polearm, you would have an easier time blocking or parrying than with some other smaller weapon. True it isn't actually dodging, but it is as close as Wyvern comes.

I realise that, but it just doesn't work. Dodging just doesn't fit well in a polearms guild.

Since we are discussing the idea, perhaps strength, weapon, and healing bonuses in the guild. I agree with Zeo about no agility bonus. Lets face it, someone wearing platemail, and wielding a halberd would be like a tank, not a ballerina.
Someone lightly armored, could wield a spear well. Besides the stabbing end, it could be used as a quarterstaff, to parry. But majority of pole arms were designed for infantry in formation, very heavy, and cumbersome weapons.

Yeah, But as they said before, thats beside the point. The whole point is the idea of the guild itself, not that one of the skills doesn't work correctly.
