Default New Response From Rhialto

Take it or leave it.

The main questions are:

1) Is the game coming back up? I believe you said something about moving the servers from the location where the trouble was taking part and having them on the cloud by the end of the summer. The community is very interested in knowing if there is any progress for the game returning to us or if it will come back at all.

2) There has been a member of the forum at wyvernrpg.com/forum who has been very persistent on asking if he and his team could buy the source code and essentially the entire game from you and host it themselves. I have no opinion on this, just speaking on behalf of the parties in interest.

3) The last question was, if you have given up on Wyvern, is would you let the game go open source? It isn't a very popular opinion with the community, but everyone understands if there are no plans for the game to ever return, the community would rather it live than die completely.

Thank you for taking time to read, I hope to hear from you soon.

A lot of it depends on some developments at Google that are taking their sweet time to unfold -- like, years. But there has been definite progress there, and hosting Wyvern on Google infrastructure (a version of Option 1) is becoming more viable.

Just be patient for a bit longer. I expect to have to make a final decision by next summer.
Here you go. Not what everyone (or myself) was hoping for, but it's something.

I don't understand why not host the game on a VPS. For $5 per month, you can get 1GB RAM, 4 CPUs and 100MBPS network. This machine can hold at least 200 players for most old-class MMORPGs (Tibia, for example). If the game is illegal in a specific location ("moving the servers from the location where the trouble was taking part"), then host in a VPS that is located elsewhere.

Because a Wyvern that was reliably up without lag would just be... wrong.

I'm not the only one that can make an effort for it to happen sooner. I formed that letter over the summer when I had more free time. I do not have the time to host such a movement but would gladly participate in anything the community would like to do. But if you are content with accepting the response and waiting another year, then that is something you all have to decide.

Looks like as always there isn't much we can do, so back to the standard procedure of twiddling our thumbs for a undetermined amount of time until one day we get word that the game is up.

I cant remember if this is the 2nd or 3rd time i've personally done it, but it usually works out on its own.

Me and my other old Wyvern Colleagues have something big cooking to get Steve to understand the severity of getting the game up. Will let everyone know soon when it's a set plan.

You do realize that it's just a game, don't you?

I guess for me it's more than a game, it was a big part of my life. It's a memory I have with one of the best friends I've ever had, a means of making new ones, an unforgettable game and experience. I won't give up without fighting to get this game back, not just for me but for everyone else that's been waiting for Wyvern and has those same memories. Cliche I know, but still.

Liking a game enough to make an effort to keep it around is one thing. Saying you have some big scheme to get the game creator to "understand" the "severity" of why he needs to get it up for you, is another as it sounds insane - It comes across as if you plan to threaten him if he doesn't bring the game back up in your desired time-frame.

Now that you mention it, it definitely does.. Please disregard my moment of insanity. But I still want to do something!

That's quite a sizable amount of time for no guarantee of a conclusion to the downtime. Doesn't even sound like he has much of a plan at this point other than 'wait and see'. NOt the most proactive route.

I hate to break it to you, but that's pretty much how things have been for years, Halloween. Occasionally we'd get a little sympathy help, but, for the most part, we spent the time trying to hold things together as best we could while we waited for that thing to happen that would "allow" him to get involved again. So, you think waiting until next summer for Rhialto to "maybe" work out the game's server issues is bad? Well, you don't know bad until you've be on that train as long as I was.

You're a saint.

But yeah, that would get annoying really fast (or slowly, with how long R takes).

I know a taurus who's been doing the same thing to me, lol. So I have a vague idea of how it feels... and that is why I say that he is a taurus... plus he looks like one.
