Magic + Find weakness
Recently I have been retraining and had planned to be a fire/air mage with 20 fw. However after going from 10/15 find weakness I noticed that my average damage with thunderstorm went down from about 350 to about 320. The test was against another halfling, emberwind, with no resists. I did not do any real testing from lvls 0-10 on thunderstorm so I have no data to use at that level.
The strangest thing about this is that It seems that I kill things faster now even though my avereage damage (against halfling mages anyway) has appearantly gone down. For my testing I had 16 air and 10 fw, i then casted thunderstom 5 times and took an average, i then trained to lvl 15 fw and came back and tried thunderstorm another 5 times. I may just not be using enough samples but the data was pretty suggestive that my average was droping. I wanted to know if anyone else has done similar test on fw with magic and may help provide more input before i spend 370k or so to get 5 more skill in fw. |

I did a FW test on fireball a while back, I only tested 0 and 15 FW with 29 fire.
I noticed a slightly more than double increase in damage for an average.

Did emberwind level between your tests?

@salkand, thanks for the response, I did not test my fireball but I have noticed that it kills a lot faster so my results could be limited to the thunderstorm spell or just bad testing.
@goonyton No, there was only about 1 minute between the two tests, we tested in coran with 10fw then i immediatly trained and tried again with 15fw |

Perhaps, now im just pulling this out as a theory, but Say find weakness really trys to find a weakness. Say, that Emberwind has no weakness to your airspell, so there for when you have the find weakness it cannot find a weakness. But on a monster, they have weaknesses, so the skill "finds" the weakness and exploits it, dealing more damage to a monster.
I have no proof thats how it works, just a quick theory.

My experiance with FW is limited to fireball, lightening bolt, and a rod of blizzard. At level 4 FW there was a very noticeable increase in the damage compared to no FW with all of them against all monsters.
Between Level 4 and 14 I did no testing I just trained it. After training to level 14 the increase in damage on average seems to be around double for fireball against all comers. The Rod of Ice storm has been kind of interesting though, for a red dragon it is at least twice as strong might be more, but against a wyvern I am having a hard time seeing an improvement over the 4 FW. The same can also be said for my prismatic shield. I have wondered before and I wonder again, do the higher levels of a given skill help as much as the lower levels or is the effects of the higher levels lessened as you train it higher? |
